Susan Chapman is the founder and principal tutor of Granary Studio, where she has created a welcoming teaching space for people who want to learn through materials, process and skilled tuition.
Her own background is rooted in textile practice, stitch, image and mixed media, and this knowledge sits at the heart of the studio. Susan teaches with a strong understanding of technique, but also with an awareness that good teaching is not simply about demonstrating a process. It is about helping people understand what they are doing, why it works, and how they might take that knowledge further in their own work.
Susan has many years’ experience teaching textile and mixed-media processes to students at different stages, from complete beginners to those working at an advanced or degree level. Her teaching is practical, generous and attentive, with an emphasis on materials, experimentation and individual development. Students are encouraged to ask questions, test ideas and build confidence through doing.
At Granary Studio, Susan’s role extends beyond her own classes. She carefully selects and hosts visiting tutors, choosing artists and specialist practitioners with real knowledge of their subject and the ability to teach clearly. This gives the studio a varied programme while maintaining a consistent standard: small groups, experienced tutors, thoughtful tuition and time for individual attention.
Granary Studio reflects Susan’s belief that creative learning should be welcoming without being lightweight. The studio offers space for people to begin, return, develop or deepen their creative practice, supported by tutors who understand their materials and care about how they teach.
Alongside her teaching, Susan continues to develop her own work as an artist, bringing her ongoing studio practice into the way she thinks about process, experimentation and creative confidence. This combination of experience, skill and openness shapes the atmosphere of Granary Studio: a place where people can learn properly, explore materials seriously, and feel supported as they develop their own creative direction.
