About Granary Studio

A welcoming studio with room to explore and time to learn

Granary Studio is a small creative teaching studio in Owslebury, near Winchester, on the edge of the South Downs National Park.

The studio offers workshops and classes led by skilled artists and specialist tutors, with a strong emphasis on materials, process, skill and individual attention. It is a place for learning, experimenting and developing creative confidence, whether you are beginning, returning to creative work, or building on existing experience.

Classes are small by design. That keeps the atmosphere friendly and focused, and gives tutors time to respond properly to each person’s work.

Thoughtful teaching, serious skill

Granary Studio is not about quick projects or one-size-fits-all instruction. The teaching is practical, generous and grounded in real experience.

Tutors are chosen for their knowledge, skill and ability to teach clearly. Many are practising artists, textile artists, printmakers, designers or specialist tutors with many years of professional and teaching experience.

The aim is to create classes where people feel welcome, but where the teaching still has depth. Students are encouraged to learn new techniques, explore materials, ask questions and develop their own creative practice.

What we offer

Granary Studio offers a varied programme of workshops and classes, with a particular strength in textiles and stitched practice, alongside feltmaking, printmaking, drawing, mixed media and related studio practices.

Some classes are suitable for people who are completely new to a subject. Others are designed for those with more experience who want to deepen their skills or explore a process in greater detail.

Each workshop description explains what the class covers, what you need to bring, and whether any materials or equipment are available at the studio.

Susan Chapman
& visiting tutors

Granary Studio is led by Susan Chapman, an artist and experienced tutor whose work and teaching are rooted in textile practice, materials and the human stories carried through cloth, stitch and image.

Alongside Susan’s own teaching, Granary Studio hosts visiting tutors with specialist knowledge across a range of creative disciplines. The programme is carefully chosen so that students can learn from people who understand their materials, know their subject and care about teaching well.

The studio setting

The studio is attached to The Granary in the village of Owslebury, close to historic Winchester and the South Downs.

It is a rural setting, with beautiful countryside nearby. The Pilgrims Way passes close to the studio, Monarch’s Way is also nearby, and Hinton Ampner is only a few miles away. There are traditional pubs in Owslebury and neighbouring villages, and a list of local B&Bs is available on request.

Granary Studio is a working studio rather than a formal classroom. It is practical, welcoming and full of materials, tools and evidence of creative work in progress.

Our approach

Granary Studio is built around small groups, skilled teaching and time to pay attention.

We want people to feel welcome without lowering the level of what is being taught. You do not need to arrive with everything worked out. You do need curiosity, openness and a willingness to explore.

Whether you come for a single workshop or return regularly, the aim is the same: to give you space, guidance and encouragement to develop your own creative practice.
