Sashiko Myozashi & Hitomezashi     

This two‑day hand‑stitch course introduces participants to the quiet power of Japanese Sashiko—hand stitching as both a practical and reflective making practice. Rooted in the rural traditions of the Edo period, Sashiko began as a method of reinforcing and extending the life of everyday garments. Today, it offers a mindful, sustainable approach to working with cloth, one that values rhythm, repetition, and the intimate knowledge that emerges through the hand.

The first day focuses on the cultural and historical context of Sashiko and the development of core techniques. Through slow, rhythm‑centred demonstrations and hands‑on stitching, participants will learn different ways to apply traditional patterns to cloth and create a small functional textile such as a washcloth, a small cushion or purse, or embellish a garment of their own. The day emphasises slow making, material sensitivity, and the creative potential of repair.

The second day introduces Hitomezashi, the grid‑based form of Sashiko that offers a deeper exploration of pattern, rhythm and the meditative qualities of one‑stitch repetition. Participants will learn how to mark grids, build structured patterns, and integrate Hitomezashi into practical textile repair. The afternoon focuses on application—reinforcing worn areas, strengthening seams, and using decorative stitching to mend and renew garments.

Across both days, the course combines cultural context, technical skill and contemporary relevance. Participants will leave with samples, a completed or in‑progress project, and the confidence to continue practising at home using simple, accessible tools.

This course is suitable for beginners, though some stitching experience is helpful. All materials are provided.
